Introduction:
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a progressive and debilitating respiratory condition that affects millions of people worldwide. Despite extensive research on the etiology and pathogenesis of COPD, the underlying mechanisms that contribute to its development and progression remain poorly understood. Recent studies have suggested that epigenetic modifications may play a crucial role in the pathophysiology of COPD. Epigenetic modifications are heritable changes in gene expression that occur without alterations in the underlying DNA sequence. It is now increasingly recognized that epigenetic mechanisms, such as DNA methylation, histone modifications, and non-coding RNAs, can influence the development and progression of COPD.
This thesis aims to explore the role of epigenetic modifications in the development and progression of COPD. By investigating the epigenetic changes associated with COPD, we hope to elucidate the molecular mechanisms that drive disease progression and identify potential therapeutic targets for intervention. The findings from this study have the potential to advance our understanding of COPD pathogenesis and pave the way for the development of novel epigenetic-based therapies for this debilitating disease.

Thesis Overview:
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, characterized by progressive airflow limitation and chronic inflammation of the airways. The pathogenesis of COPD is complex and multifactorial, involving genetic, environmental, and epigenetic factors. While genetic predisposition and environmental exposures have been extensively studied in COPD, the role of epigenetic modifications in disease development and progression remains relatively understudied.
This thesis seeks to address this knowledge gap by exploring the role of epigenetic modifications in the development and progression of COPD. Using a combination of literature review, research methodology, and data analysis, we aim to elucidate the molecular mechanisms underlying COPD pathogenesis and identify potential epigenetic biomarkers and therapeutic targets for this debilitating disease. By integrating findings from previous studies with novel research findings, this thesis aims to advance our understanding of COPD pathophysiology and contribute to the development of personalized, epigenetic-based therapies for COPD patients.
