Introduction
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a devastating neurodegenerative disease that affects motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord. Patients with ALS experience progressive muscle weakness and atrophy, leading to difficulties with movement, speech, swallowing, and ultimately, breathing. As the disease progresses, patients require extensive care and support to maintain their quality of life.
Nurses play a crucial role in caring for patients with ALS, providing physical care, emotional support, symptom management, and coordination of care among various healthcare providers. Despite the important role that nurses play in caring for patients with ALS, there is limited research exploring their experiences in providing care for these patients.
This thesis aims to explore the experiences of nurses caring for patients with ALS, including the challenges they face, the strategies they use to provide care, and the impact of caring for patients with this devastating disease. By gaining a deeper understanding of the experiences of nurses caring for patients with ALS, we can identify ways to better support and empower these healthcare providers in delivering high-quality care to patients with ALS.

Thesis Overview
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a devastating neurodegenerative disease that presents unique challenges for both patients and healthcare providers. Nurses, in particular, play a crucial role in caring for patients with ALS, providing physical care, emotional support, and coordination of care to ensure the best possible outcomes for these patients.
This thesis aims to explore the experiences of nurses caring for patients with ALS, shedding light on the challenges they face, the strategies they use to provide care, and the impact of caring for patients with this devastating disease. By gaining a deeper understanding of the experiences of nurses caring for patients with ALS, we can identify ways to better support and empower these healthcare providers in delivering high-quality care to patients with ALS.
Through a comprehensive literature review, research methodology, discussion of findings, and conclusion, this thesis aims to contribute to the existing body of knowledge on ALS care and provide valuable insights for nurses, healthcare providers, policymakers, and researchers working in the field of neurodegenerative diseases. The findings of this study have the potential to inform nursing practice, healthcare policy, and future research on ALS care, ultimately improving the quality of care provided to patients with ALS and enhancing the well-being of both patients and healthcare providers.
