Introduction
Osteoporosis is a debilitating metabolic bone disease characterized by low bone mass and microarchitectural deterioration of bone tissue, leading to an increased risk of fractures. It is a major public health concern, especially among the elderly population, as fractures resulting from osteoporosis can have serious consequences on mobility, independence, and quality of life. Various pharmacological interventions are available for the prevention and management of osteoporosis, but these treatments often come with side effects and are not always effective. As such, there is a growing interest in exploring alternative approaches, such as dietary interventions, for the prevention and management of osteoporosis.
One such approach is the use of dietary phytochemicals, which are bioactive compounds found in plants that have been shown to exert beneficial effects on bone health. Phytochemicals have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-catabolic properties, making them promising candidates for the prevention and management of osteoporosis. However, much of the existing research on the effects of phytochemicals on bone health has been conducted in vitro or in animal models, and there is a need for more human studies to validate these findings.
This thesis aims to evaluate the effects of dietary phytochemicals on the prevention and management of osteoporosis in humans. Specifically, it will examine the potential mechanisms by which phytochemicals exert their effects on bone health, as well as the clinical evidence supporting their use in the prevention and management of osteoporosis. By synthesizing the existing literature and conducting a systematic review of relevant studies, this thesis aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the current state of research on this topic and identify gaps in the literature that warrant further investigation.
